Hi families! I hope you are enjoying a fun, eventful, yet relaxing summer with your children. I sure miss them! I would like to share with you several book series that are popular with second graders. Reading books across a motivating series is a great way for your children to practice the skills they learned this year in identifying the problem, what the characters are like and how the characters respond to the problem, and how the problem is solved. Characters are consistent across a series, so students can practice making predictions and more accurate inferences because they have had the opportunity to get to "know" those characters in multiple books.
Here are some popular series you may want to check out when you visit the library (don't forget about the summer reading program offered by the Santa Clara Public Library. I hear they have one for adults too!)
The Littles, by John Peterson. This is an old series, but a favorite! We read the first book in class this year.
Cam Jansen, by David Adler. This is a great series if your student is just getting started in the mystery genre. This is at the second grade level. Nancy Drew is a much higher level, so start with this series first, unless your child is reading above grade level (a 4 on the report card). There is also a series called Young Cam Jansen if your child is not quite at the second grade reading level yet.
Katie Kazoo Switcheroo, by Nancy Krulik. This was a favorite series of my three daughters. We read the first book in class, when Katie turned into her class hamster!
Magic Tree House, by Mary Pope Osbourne. This another older series about kids who travel back in time.
Eerie Elementary, by Jack Chabert
Any series by Scholastic Branches. If your child is reading at grade level, any series in the L-M range should be perfect to read and comprehend.
The Chicken Squad, by Doreen Cronin. SO funny! The kids love this series!
Mercy Watson, by Kate DiCamillo
This should get you started! I'd love to hear what your child is reading! Remember, Seesaw is active through the summer, so send my a message and I WILL respond! Take care.

Homework is Due April 25!
Please remember, April homework is due Thursday the 25th. Fifteen squares need to be completed. Please review your child's work to make sure it is neat and organized and complete. If he/she does not complete the required squares, he/she will work on it during Study Hall on Friday afternoon, while the other students are participating in Fun Friday activities. So, encourage your child to spend the time AT HOME to complete the required activities so he/she can have FUN on Friday!
